Resisting Ruby Rose Blog Tour and Giveaway!

I'm back with the second installment in Jessie Humphries' Ruby Rose series! Check out my review of the first book, Killing Ruby Rose, here. Scroll all the way down for a rafflecopter giveaway, too!!!

Also, can I just say how much I LOVE what Skyscape is doing with their series?! I love that the subsequent books don't take a year to come out. <3

About RESISTING RUBY ROSE: Still reeling from the heartbreaking events that unfolded on Grissom Island, Ruby Rose is trying to come to terms with the fact that she’s gone from a vigilante in killer shoes to a stone-cold killer. Everyone from her therapist to her smoking-hot boyfriend keeps trying to convince her that she hasn’t crossed over to the dark side, but Ruby isn’t so sure. It doesn’t help that her nemesis, Detective “Mastermind” Martinez, is still out there, waiting for another chance to take her down.

When an alleged CIA agent named Skryker shows up and asks for a meeting, Ruby figures it just means more questions about her case. But he has information of an entirely different nature and a job offer: join an elite force of young assassins, including Skryker’s right-hand guy, Quinn Donovan. Quinn is distractingly charming, handsome—and deadly. Ruby resists becoming a killer again, but as she becomes more ensnared in a web of deceit, no one around her is safe.

My Review:
I actually enjoyed this book better than the first. The first half of this one is less about Ruby being a bad-ass, and more about what being a bad-ass and having killed people has done to her. I liked getting deeper into Ruby's character in this book.

Of course, there's still plenty of action, as Ruby and Liam get pulled into an organization of elite young assassins, and Martinez continues to come after Ruby and what's left of her family.

Quinn is an intriguing and fun new character, and I loved getting to know Damon Silver, Ruby's biological father, better, too. As with the first book, there's room for a sequel without leaving the reader hanging. I will be looking forward to that third book if it comes.

About Jessie Humphries: Jessie Humphries was born and raised in Las Vegas, NV. She received a BA from San Diego State University, where she cultivated her love of the beach, then lived in France, where she cultivated her weakness for shoes, and finally earned a law degree from UNLV, where she cultivated her interest in justice. After practicing law for several years she began writing, and, appropriately, her debut novel Killing Ruby Rose is a thriller about vigilante justice set in sunny southern California with a shoe-obsessed protagonist. Jessie currently writes and practices law in Las Vegas, where she lives with her husband and children.

Lexi’s Chance by Constance Phillips

The Eighth Guardian Blog Tour

I'm so excited to be a part of the blog tour for THE EIGHTH GUARDIAN by Meredith McCardle! See below for my review and a chance to win a giveaway!

About THE EIGHTH GUARDIAN: Amanda Obermann. Code name Iris.

It’s Testing Day. The day that comes without warning, the day when all juniors and seniors at The Peel Academy undergo a series of intense physical and psychological tests to see if they’re ready to graduate and become government operatives. Amanda and her boyfriend Abe are top students, and they’ve just endured thirty-six hours of testing. But they’re juniors and don’t expect to graduate. That’ll happen next year, when they plan to join the CIA—together.

decades. And she receives the opportunity of a lifetime: to join a secret government organization called the Annum Guard and travel through time to change the course of history. But in order to become the Eighth Guardian in this exclusive group, Amanda must say good-bye to everything—her name, her family, and even Abe—forever.

Who is really behind the Annum Guard? And can she trust them with her life?

My Review:

Amanda is a student at Peel Academy, expecting to go into the CIA with her boyfriend Abe when they graduate next year. But when she is pulled after Testing Day a year early, Amanda is whisked away to become the eighth member of the Annum Guard, a secret time-traveling agency. She is allowed no further contact with anyone, including Abe, and is even given a new name--Iris. Even worse, she discovers her place in the Annum Guard is far from secure. If she fails, she'll be incarcerated in solitary confinement for the rest of her life.

This was a fun, entertaining read full of intrigue and twists. The historical parts as Iris travels back in time are interesting and well-written. The novel is fast-paced, and the characters we meet are compelling and fully realized. My only real issue was the romance. It didn't feel fully fleshed out to me, probably because Amanda is whisked away from Abe by the second chapter. I would have liked some flashbacks to their relationship so that when [something spoilery happens] it has more of an impact.

4 stars.

GILDED blog tour: GILDED playlist

I am SO THRILLED to be part of the blog tour for Christina Farley's debut, GILDED!!! I "met" Christina when we exchanged 50-page critiques after we met on the Blueboards, when Christy still lived in Korea. So I have seen GILDED from fairly early in its creation. I am so happy to see it out in the world as a REAL BOOK.

And now, Christina has stopped by to talk about her playlist for GILDED! Then scroll down for a rafflecopter GIVEAWAY!

Playlist for GILDED
I’m a big fan of listening to music as I write. I suppose it began as a way to keep all the noise around me from becoming a distraction. But now I also find it key element to help me enter the world I’ve created in the GILDED series. You can check out this video where I share the songs that I chose for the book and why:

While I was writing GILDED, I listened to a set of songs and those inspired many of the scenes in the book. Here’s the list (here is the link to it on my website: http://christinafarley.com/extras/) or you can listen to the playlist here:

A girl with a black belt and a deadly proclivity with steel-tipped arrows discovers an ancient Korean god has been kidnapping the first-born daughters of her family for generations. And she’s next.
Sixteen-year-old Jae Hwa Lee is a Korean-American girl with a black belt, a deadly proclivity with steel-tipped arrows, and a chip on her shoulder the size of Korea itself. When her widowed dad uproots her to Seoul from her home in L.A., Jae thinks her biggest challenges will be fitting in to a new school and dealing with her dismissive Korean grandfather. Then she discovers that a Korean demi-god has been stealing the soul of the oldest daughter of each generation in her family for centuries. And she's next.
But that’s not Jae’s only problem.
There's also Marc. Irresistible and charming, Marc threatens to break the barriers around Jae's heart. As the two grow closer, Jae must decide if she can trust him. But Marc has a secret of his own -- one that could help Jae overturn the curse on her family for good. “An amazing contemporary fantasy that explores the vast legends of Korea, this richly detailed novel kept me turning the pages well into the night. Jae Hwa starts off as a strong character and ends as a noble one, using both her brains and her brawn to win the day–she’s exactly the kind of girl YA literature needs.”
~from Beth Revis, NY Times Bestselling author of Across the Universe series

"Farley brings South Korea's fascinating culture and mythology into vivid detail in this shining debut, and Jae is a compelling heroine. An exotic, thrilling read, GILDED had me utterly entranced!"
